It is a hyper-eutectic alloy containing a comparatively high amount of silicon (Si). It is commercially important for its high strength to weight ratio and wear resistance, which makes it suitable for applications where reduction of weight is a design consideration. It has lower coefficient of thermal expansion than LM13 & LM28 alloys.
Properties: High resistance to corrosion under atmospheric conditions, anodized satisfactorily by the sulphuric acid process, good fluidity and bearing properties
Suitable for: Pulleys (sheaves), for pistons for all types of diesel and petrol engines, automobile engine block, gear boxes, cylinder heads, manifolds etc
